An Abject game consists of sets. A set begins by giving both players eleven cards, and ends when both players have three cards. Players alternate who goes first in each set.
On each turn, a player must play two cards. Depending on which cards your opponent has played, there are certain rules that have to be followed. Some cards only restrict what cards can be played on top of them, while others restrict both cards.
| Card | Rule | Applies To |
| 2 | Only cards with this card's suit. | Self |
| 3 | Only odd numbers. | Both |
| 4 | No 4, 5, or 6. | Both |
| 5 | No cards with this card's suit, except when playing on 2 or 8. | Both |
| 6 | Only cards with this card's color. | Self |

Any card played on top of a 6 or below must have a higher number.
If a player cannot play any valid moves, they take a strike. The first player to take four strikes loses.
If it is the first turn, or if the player just took a strike, they may play any two cards.
